PAP2T and the Linksys Alarm Monitoring Solution

The PAP2T is the most popular adapter used by subscribers to the Linksys Alarm Monitoring Solution. This is probably due to the fact that, at under $50, it is the lowest cost model in the Linksys VoIP adapter range.

PAP2 as Alarm Dialer

UL certification is proof of the safe, high quality build of Linksys VoIP adapters like the SPA3102 & PAP2T

Linksys IP Alarm Dialer

The sub US$50 price tag is a bonus for Alarm Dealers & their Customers.

PAP2T VoIP Features

With Internet telephony, along with low domestic and international phone rates, an impressive array of special phone features are available. Choose your preferred free local dialing US area code, regardless of where you live. Or add a virtual phone number in any area code, forwarded to your Internet phone. You can even add a toll-free number. The Linksys Phone Adapter is compatible with these and all of the other special telephone features that are available from your telephone service provider, such as Caller ID, Call Waiting, Voicemail, Call Forwarding, Distinctive Ring, etc. When used on seperate lines - none of the above VoIP features are affected by the alarm monitoring settings.

Firmware

For a while, people were able to unlock the "locked" devices offered by providers such as Vonage, however since mid November 2005, a firmware update has been released which "corrects" some of loopholes being used to unlock the devices. In one particular instance, Vonage have actually withdrawn some of their PAP2's from UK retailers such as Comet in order to replace them with units containing the newer firmware, so that there is little chance of them being unlocked. As of 2007, all Vonage PAP2 devices can be unlocked. However, PAP2s, including PAP2-NAs locked to other providers generally cannot be unlocked without either that provider's encryption key or admin password.

PAP2T versus SPA3102

The PAP2T has two lines that both work over the Internet - but not telco lines. The SPA3102 has a single VoIP line and a single Telco line. For this reason, the PAP2T is used where alarm signalling is single path (IP only) and the SPA3102 is used where alarm signalling is dual path (IP + POTS or cellular backup).

Branding the Product

As with most "off the shelf" Linksys devices, your company has the option of replacing the stickers on the plastic case with your own stickers or removing the printed circuit board entirely from the plastic case and promoting the device as a PCB Only product that can be installed neatly inside the alarm control panel.
